Meet Our Staff

Michael Smith - Principal Veterinarian

I have been a vet for 17 years now and still thoroughly enjoy what I do. I have a keen interest in surgery especially in orthopaedic operations such as cruciate repairs (Knee Reconstruction) and luxating patella surgery (Dislocating Knee Caps) which are common problem in dogs.

I am also interested in treating dogs with long standing skin problems and find it very rewarding to see animals recover from being extremely itchy & irritated to enjoying a normal life again. I love what I do, don't see it as "work" & enjoy the look on clients faces when their companion is back on the road to recovery.

I keep up to date by attending conferences & meetings regularly, have recently been to the Australian Veterinary Association annual conference in Darwin.

I have completed post graduate studies in Small Animal Surgery.

In my spare time (when I have some) I enjoy spending time at the beach with my 3 children and lovable 'Dogue de Bordeaux' dog Heidi. I also enjoy spending time on my pushbike, road racing & track (velodrome) racing.

Jo Dean - Dog Groomer extrordinaire (Pawfect Dog Grooming Service)
Hi, my name is Jo and I am the groomer here at Stella Street Veterinary Clinic. I am a qualified professional dog groomer and have been working at the clinic since 2007. Grooming is my passion and I started grooming because of my love for dogs. My aim is to make the grooming experience pleasant and non stressful for both the dog and the owner. I am a member of the Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) and adhere strictly to their code of conduct and ethics in relation to the treatments of all animals left in my care.

I attend as many grooming expos and seminars both here and overseas as I can, to continually hone my skills and keep up to date with the latest style trends an grooming equipment. I recently returned from Pasadena in California where I attended a number of seminars and also viewed grooming competitions where the best in the world were competing, and I have brought back some exciting new ideas.

I own two rescue poodles, Max who is 6 years old and Nelson, who is 2 years old. When I am not at Stella Street Veterinary clinic, you may see me walking my dogs around Bateau Bay where I live.

Kim Jones - Veterinary Nurse, Puppy Preschool and Adult Dog Training (Mutts Manners)
Hi, My name is Kim and I have worked in the animal industry as a vet nurse and dog behavioral trainer for over 25 years, and I am very passionate about my work with my four legged friends. I work part time here at Stella Street as a vet nurse and run my own puppy and adult dog training business part time. I am a delta accredited dog behavior trainer and conduct puppy classes here at the clinic. (which is one of my great loves).

I have a cat called Scrap who is a RSPCA special. He is now 6 years old. He rules my household, but he is very affectionate and loving.

Stephanie - Practice Manager / Head Nurse
Cert 4 Veterinary nursing, Critical care and emergency nursing, Dental Nursing and Horse management course.
I joined Stella Street Veterinary clinc 4 years ago. I have been nursing for 7 years. I have always had a passion for animals and their welfare. I am involved with all aspects of the clinic and I work full time. (it is rare not to see me there) I have never seen my job as work as I enjoy working with the team we have and each day is interesting and brings new challenges.

I have quite a few animals. Gemma a 12 year old Ridgeback cross, Gypsy a 12 year old Border Collie, Maddison (Turtle) a 5 year old Maltese x Pomeranian Heidi 4 year old Dogue De Bordeaux, Tilda a 3 year old cat (tortie), Summer a 1 year old cat, Chris and Ebony both 1 year old cats and two blue tongue lizards one called Snappy and the other Percy.

Also I could be fostering or rescuing others.

Helen - Hi my name is Helen & I usually work saturdays and fill in on other occassions as well. I have been at Stella Street for the past 5 years. My main hobbies are looking after my Grandchildren. I have a daughter who plays Rugby Union for Australia.

Makaylah - I have been working at Stella Street for the past 12 months initially as a volunteer which has led to a trainee position. I am studying Vet Nursing at TAFE one to two days per week.

Heidi - Heidi was a rescue dog which was handed in to us 3 years ago in a shocking state. She is a 4 year old Dogue De Bordeaux.

Heidi enjoys sleeping, eating, going to the beach, sleeping, sniffing, snoring, dribbling after a drink and sleeping. She is in at work everyday to keep a closed eye on the general running of the clinic.

Chris and Ebony - Both Chris and Ebony were both rescue cats. They both Domestic short hair. Chris is pure white and enjoys eating, chewing, destroying whatever he can, jumping and snuggles.

When Chris came to the clinic he was a bit of a challenge. He was riddled with worms and fleas and also was a little untrusting. He is now a wonderful cat. He Got his name as we got him around Christmas time.

Ebony is a tortoiseshell cat by colour but not by nature, she is much quieter than Chris (but can still stand up for self), she enjoys food and pats especially chin scratches. Ebony was in a terrible car accident and now after two surgeries her right leg is mainly metal (including pins and wire) not that it stops her from doing anything.
